Did you know that 99.9% of all species that ever lived on Earth are estimated to be extinct? Natural ecosystems are degrading at an alarming rate, which is why the United Nations agreed on the Convention for Biological Diversity 25 years ago. The Convention was created with the goal of conserving biodiversity, its sustainable uses, and the fair sharing of its benefits.

The diverse variety of life on Earth is crucial for the welfare and prosperity of people today and all generations to come. In order to bring awareness to the importance of biodiversity, the General Assembly officially named May 22nd as the International Day for Biological Diversity. This year’s theme honors the Convention’s 25th anniversary.
