After more than a decade observing Saturn, NASA’s Cassini spacecraft is preparing to write its final chapter. On September 15, Cassini will complete a “Grand Finale” set of maneuvers and crash into Saturn’s atmosphere. The craft’s time in space has taught us more about Saturn and its moons than we ever thought possible.

The problem is that Cassini is running low on rocket fuel, which is why its mission must come to a fiery end. NASA has decided to say goodbye to the historic probe in order to prevent Cassini from crashing into and contaminating Saturn’s moons.
