Freelancing in America: 2016” is the most comprehensive measure of the U.S. independent workforce. How many Americans are freelancing? Why? What is their potential impact on elections? The Freelancers Union and Upwork wanted to answer these questions in their third annual study.

The online survey of 6,002 U.S. adults who have done paid work in the past 12 months discovered that 55 million Americans are freelancing, freelancers contribute an estimated $1 trillion annually in freelance earnings to the U.S. economy, and 79% said freelancing is better than working a traditional job.
