Security is very important to Infogram. People are often curious how safe and secure their data is using our tool. Some are simply concerned about the security and compliance of introducing SaaS solutions into their daily life. We’ve decided to address a few of these questions head-on.
We spoke with Infogram’s Maksims Berjoza about peak traffic times, customer data security, our application’s architecture, and trends he sees in the future.
What is your role with Infogram?
I joined Infogram in October 2014 as the product owner. It’s essentially a management position, keeping the communication clear between Mikko (Infogram’s CEO), marketing, sales, customer success, design, and development. I coordinate and prioritize the production process, clarifying what needs to be done and making sure requests are met. Eventually, as I took on more responsibilities, Mikko asked me to become CTO. Every day I work to make our product better.
What are Infogram’s peak traffic periods and how does the product scale to meet these needs?
We have a lot of customers in the media using Infogram to embed charts in news articles. This usually involves hot topics like elections and sports, which drive a lot of traffic. Handling that influx of traffic isn’t an issue for us because we use Amazon Web Services (AWS), which we are very happy with.
Can you give us an overview of Infogram’s application and architecture?
On the application side of things, we are a JavaScript app. Node.js and Express is our backend – Backbone, React JS, D3 the frontend. On the infrastructure level, we use AWS, which allows us to scale quickly and manage infrastructure on a highly secure level.
What is your view of how SaaS security is different from on-premise security?
Cloud-based and on-premise are both apps and should have the same security level. Security should be the #0 priority in both cases.
How does Infogram treat customer’s data security?
We keep our infrastructure updated with limited access. On the app level, we have the same approach. We update our system and review the code. We have to occasionally access users’ data in order to provide support, but that requires the user’s permission. Infogram only provides secure HTTPS connections, which means that data exchanged between the user’s browser and the Infogram server is fully encrypted.
What are you looking forward to in terms of new trends or technologies for applications like Infogram?
Let me start with a controversial message: ‘Browser eating B2B.’ Data visualization was viewed as geeky for a long time, something that was done on desktop computers. As time goes on we continue to free the data visualization creation process, providing easy web access and helping regular people learn how to make charts and find their own insights.
Once we have someone using Infogram, we see that they trust us and we have to be very serious about our security every day. The trend never changes – make our users feel happy and safe!
If you still have questions regarding security at Infogram, feel free to schedule a meeting to talk to our team. Our Infogram experts are always on hand to listen to your concerns and help you find a plan that is right for you.
