How to visualize a web page? Easy, if you have Infogram and a little bit of magic

That’s right! Our good friends over at Import.io have created a magical feature that allows you to turn a table-based web page into a spreadsheet. Then it takes a couple of minutes to visualize it with Infogram. Watch how it’s done and try yourself:

1. Choose your table-based web page

There are plenty of table-based web pages displaying awesome data. Think of all the online shops, catalogues, lists, pricing tables. This time we chose to explore IMDB movie database to discover the best and the worst movies of 2014.

2. Turn it into a spreadsheet with Import.io

Now that you have chosen your data source, let’s turn it into a spreadsheet with the Import.io Magic feature. Just copy the URL of the IMDB page and paste it into Import.io Magic. Once you click “Get Data”, Import.io will generate a spreadsheet for you in seconds.

3. Download it

You cannot do much with the Import.io spreadsheet exept deleting some columns you don’t need, therefore let’s download it. Find the “Download” button at the bottom. Once you press it, select how many pages you would like to include and Import.io will generate a CSV file for you.

4. Filter the best and the worst movies

Ok, let’s explore our data! There is much information we have now, like titles, directors, and lengths of movies. In this case we are interested in the best and the worst movies of 2014, so let’s filter the user rating! There is a filtering option in every major spreadsheet software. We need to filter it in descending order for the best movies and in ascending order for the worst. Find this function as an “A – Z/Z-A” icon or under the “Data” selection if you use MS Excel, Google Spreadsheets, Office Libre or Open Office.

5. Visualize your data with Infogram

Now that you have found the top best and the top worst movies on IMDB in 2014, let’s visualize it with Infogram. Just go to Infogram, choose the theme you like and add a bar chart. Double-click on it as it appears and change your dummy data with top best and top worst movies. Watch how it’s done starting from here.

Once you have your interactive bar chart created, let’s just feature the best user-rated movie on IMDB. We don’t need any data extraction for that, so let’s just add a movie synopsis and insert a trailer using new media insertion feature. Some facts and figures wouldn’t harm too.
