Florida has long been known as the shark attack capital of America for decades. In 2018's International Shark Attack File annual summary, unprovoked shark attacks (which can range from bites and abrasions to fatalities) are down around the world, including in Florida. 

Because of Volusia County's status as a top beach-going and surfing destination, shark incidents are reported more frequently there than any other county in Florida.
